Vt. History Project  

Students will act like a historian by interpreting a primary source connected with a topic of their choice.

Assignment

Semester History Project:

 

  1. You will conduct a personalized inquiry on a topic in Vermont History of interest to you.  You will choose the content as well as the way to demonstrate your learning in a final product.  The following process and intermediate products will guide you on the journey from topic selection to final product (initial deadlines are in bold and in parentheses):

 

  1. Topic Selection and Compelling Question (16 Feb)

    1. You will select a subject or theme you find interesting and develop a compelling question about that subject.

    2. You must select a topic connected to the history of Vermont during the period 1609-2001.

  2. Annotated Bibliography of Sources (10 Apr)

    1. You will develop a list of works cited and provide information about how the sources will help you answer your question.  

    2. A minimum of six sources must be used.  At least two must be non-internet sources.  

    3. Instructions on format and a rubric will be provided separately.

  3. Analysis of a Primary Source using the Observe-Reflect-Question (ORF) and Sourcing Methods (20 Apr)

    1. You will select one primary source related to your subject.  You must have information about where the source comes from and why it was created.

    2. You will perform an ORF and Sourcing analysis of your primary source and capture your analysis in a grammatically correct paragraph.

  4. Development of a Thesis Statement (9 May)

    1. Based on your research and Primary Source analysis, you will develop a Thesis Statement for your final product.  

    2. Examples and a rubric for the thesis statement will be provided separately.

  5. Selection of a Final Product (15 May)

    1. Your product should present an answer to your compelling question.  Where appropriate, present this to the teacher and/or class.  

    2. The product may be any of the following (check with the teacher if you have an idea for a product not captured below):

      • An Essay or Letter

      • A Poem, Short Story, or Play

      • Visual Product (Drawing, Painting, Collage, Photo Essay, or Computer-Generated Graphic)

      • Podcast or Video

      • Found Product (using art, video, music, or writing produced by someone else).

      • Other Product (song, dance, performance)

  6. Development of a Project Outline (19 May)

  7. Final Product (25 May)



  1. The following Learning Targets are assessed in this project:

    1. (ANESU-MtAbe.D2.His.1.9-12) I can evaluate how historical events and developments were shaped by unique circumstances of time and place as well as broader historical contexts.

    2. (ANESU-MtAbe.D2.His.11.9-12) Critique the usefulness of historical sources for a specific historical inquiry based on their maker, date, place of origin, intended audience, and purpose.

    3. Writing:  I draw evidence from literary and informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research and organize my writing effectively and logically.

    4. Engaged (H.E.A.R.T.) I use time effectively, ask questions, take initiative, advocate for my understanding and contribute to the learning environment.

    5. Timely (H.E.A.R.T.)  I complete assignments and meet deadlines. I come to class on time and manage breaks and transitions well.
